The Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Bangladesh (OGSB)) is a distinctive society whose purpose is to contribute creating a world free from the avoidable pain, stigma, and death brought on by obstetrical and gynecological problems, together with educating and motivating the public for the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality.
When Bangladesh was still reeling from the repercussions of the battle for independence in December 1972, and everyone was celebrating the victory of the nine-month-long fierce battle, drinking in the blessing of snatching victory from the oppressor with countless deaths, starvation, loss of relatives, and wounds of liberation fighters; at the same time, the people of the country were dreaming of winning a movement to restore order to national life and provide certainty of food, clothing, and shelter. The chastity of mothers and sisters was lost, two lacs oppressed women and girls were pregnant with oppressors’ children. They are all but ruined because everybody including society, family, and community despises them. Father of the Bengali Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman show the light for those women who lost everything during the war of independence to change their fortune once and for all; so, came the specialists of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the country. Those specialists were vigilantes to look after the pregnant women by giving advice and helping to give birth to their children safely. The team of those specialists used to work day and night to serve those pregnant women all over the country with great heart and determination. Luckily, they became successful in doing so from that time.
The society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was established during those challenging times to treat the wound of the mind and in bodies of the women of Bangladesh then. The society was the pioneer of safe pregnancy and post-pregnancy treatment in the country. Its focus areas were not only the tertiary hospitals of cities but also emphasize the hospitals of the district, sub-district, union, and ward areas. Besides developing the condition of health, the community also contributed to improving the situation of unwanted pregnancy, its control, and treatment alongside the government body.
